September 28th is National Women\u2019s Health and Fitness Day! It\u2019s an annual day of awareness to promote health for women of all ages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, healthy living is important for all men, women, and non-binary people, but this day of awareness acknowledges health needs and issues specific to women. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealth.gov\/patient-materials\/resource\/fact-sheets\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Office on Women\u2019s Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, heart disease is the number one killer of American women. Heart disease also affects men at high rates, but symptoms and risk factors can differ in the female population. Women have female-specific risk factors for heart disease, such as menopause. Other risk factors, including obesity, metabolic syndrome, and depression, happen more often.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/tips-women-prevent-heart-disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Food and Drug Administration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests these tips for women to prevent heart disease:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Know Your Risk Factors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic illnesses including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoking<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A family history of premature heart disease<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Manage Current Chronic Health Conditions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Know the Signs of a Heart Attack<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tightness in the chest, arm(s), neck, jaw, back, or abdomen<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortness of breath<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extreme fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breaking out in a cold sweat<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Exercise Regularly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Eat Heart-Healthy Foods<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fruits and vegetables<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whole grains\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limited processed foods and added sugars<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Women\u2019s Health and Fitness Day is a great reminder to schedule annual health exams and screenings. These appointments are essential to preventive care and being proactive about health and wellness. Women\u2019s health exams include pap smears, mammograms, breast cancer screenings, physical exams, and blood pressure screenings. You should discuss which screenings are appropriate for your age group with your physician.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to health exams, another significant component of healthy living is regular exercise. Daily movement has enormous benefits, including more energy, a boost in mood, weight management, stress relief, and reduced disease risk. Whether you enjoy going to the gym, attending a group exercise class, or taking a walk outside, any activity that increases your heart rate and your body moving is a good choice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking for ways to move without leaving home? Check out these exercises and stretches that you can do with household items:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Chair tricep dips<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use a stable kitchen or dining room chair. Sit on the edge of the chair with your hands in a narrow position. Gently dip your hips off the chair, bending your elbows straight back.
