{"id":11716,"date":"2024-02-26T23:19:01","date_gmt":"2024-02-27T07:19:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vionicshoes.com\/blog\/?p=11716"},"modified":"2024-02-29T23:34:46","modified_gmt":"2024-03-01T07:34:46","slug":"foot-health-exercises","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vionicshoes.com\/blog\/foot-health-exercises\/","title":{"rendered":"3 Simple Foot Health Exercises to Incorporate Into Your Daily Routine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we drive our vehicles, we know that we will get the best and most efficient function if we follow a regular schedule of preventive maintenance.\u00a0 While we may not think of it in those terms, our legs are also primarily meant for efficient transportation, and as such we should also have a strategic plan to maintain our foot health.\u00a0 There are three areas that we should address in our simple daily routine for optimal foot health: joint mobility, muscle flexibility, and dynamic muscular support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The foot has 28 bones that are held together by supportive tissues known as ligaments.\u00a0 These ligaments keep the bones in proper position and maintain good alignment of the foot.\u00a0 If the ligaments become tight, it can pull the foot into undesirable positions and create malalignment.\u00a0 An example of this is when the toes are drawn upward into a position known as clawing.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11717\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.vionicshoes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Figure-1-Clawing.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"771\" height=\"644\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.vionicshoes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Figure-1-Clawing.jpg 771w, https:\/\/blog.vionicshoes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Figure-1-Clawing-300x251.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.vionicshoes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Figure-1-Clawing-768x641.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 771px) 100vw, 771px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clawing of the toes can create problems with shoe fit and can also increase the pressures on the ball of the foot. We can prevent tightness in the ligaments by doing some simple <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">foot exercises<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stretches.\u00a0 While sitting, we cross one foot over the opposite knee and pull the toes downward while also pointing the ankle down.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11718\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.vionicshoes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Figure-2-Upward-Stretch.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"487\" height=\"625\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.vionicshoes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Figure-2-Upward-Stretch.png 487w, https:\/\/blog.vionicshoes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Figure-2-Upward-Stretch-234x300.png 234w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 487px) 100vw, 487px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can also reverse the stretch by pulling the ankle upward while also pulling the toes upward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11719\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.vionicshoes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Figure-3-Downward-Stretch.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"638\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.vionicshoes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Figure-3-Downward-Stretch.png 638w, https:\/\/blog.vionicshoes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Figure-3-Downward-Stretch-300x226.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each stretch should be held for 10-15 seconds and repeated 5 times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle flexibility is also an important factor in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maintaining healthy, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">happy feet<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 Of particular importance is the Achilles\u2019 tendon that attaches the calf muscle to the heel. This powerful muscle gets tight when we sit too much or when the ankle points downward for hours such as when we sleep.\u00a0 A common sign that our calf muscles are too tight is when we have pain in the heel or arch when we try to take our first steps in the morning.\u00a0 The arch is compensating for the calf tightness.\u00a0 To start the day with a good calf stretch, extend your knees straight, turn the soles of your feet inward so they face each other, and use the muscles in the front of your shin to pull your ankles upward toward your face. You should feel a strong pull in your calf muscle. Hold <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and feel the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">foot stretch<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for 10-15 seconds and repeat it 5 times.\u00a0 Doing this before your feet hit the floor will make your first steps much more comfortable and ease the stress on your heels and arches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The final component to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">optimal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> foot health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is to maintain strength and muscle tone.\u00a0 You can do this with a simple heel raise \/ toe raise sequence.\u00a0 Stand where you can steady yourself such as next to a wall or doorway.
