    Boost your walking routine

Raise your hand if you've ever wished you were a runner. Keep it raised if you have attempted running, only to be left feeling discouraged.

The good news (ok, you can put your hands down) is: recent studies have shown that brisk walking is as beneficial for health as running. True story!

"Brisk walking is as good as running for reducing blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes risk -- three key players in the development of heart disease, a new study finds." - webmd.com

You can read more about it here.

Now the question is, how can you get into that routine, brisk walking? This article from Family Circle has some great ideas to get you started.

Lastly, you can hold yourself accountable in your new walking endeavors through Orthaheel's Walkabout 2013. It's happening now! Challenge yourself to walk every day for 28 days for your own well-being. Now is as good a time as any to make healthy habits!

    Ambassador Inspiration

Three weeks into their 28-day Walkabout, our Ambassadors are becoming seasoned walkers! They've enjoyed sharing their experiences through their blogs, Facebook and Twitter. They are feeling great, staying active and making long-term habits which whill improve their health and quality of life for the future. We hear their feet are quite happy as well.

We've asked them to share with us a little piece of their Walkabout journey. Here are a few photos, insights and fun quotes from our walking machines, questing for optimum health.

Kim S. writes, "It’s hip to be healthy. And it's healthy to be hip."
    [we think so too, Kim!]

Angie K. says, "The Walkabout Challenge has been such a blessing both physically and emotionally! Daily walking has helped me lose a few more pounds with 30 pounds lost so far this year, and walking with my children and husband has proved to be good for the soul!

Jessica O. shares, "Walkabout has inspired me to give up on excuses and just WALK.  In the past, I'd often use "bad weather" as an excuse to drive to work instead of walk.  Now I'm looking for any excuse to put on my shoes and hit the pavement, and I've found that walking in the rain is actually fun!"

Monica O. says, "At 32 weeks pregnant it's been a challenge to get out and walk every day, especially with 2 little ones accompanying me. We've been finding ways to make the walks special so that it lifts not only my mood, but my entire families. On this particular day my son's and I enjoyed a beautiful walk around the Detroit Zoo."

Ana P. gets witty with a Walkabout jingle. Note, you need to sing this to the tune of "These Boots are Made for Walkin”

"These shoes are made for walkin‘
And that's just what they'll do
Walk in these and you'll end up a happier, healthier you."

Laurie C. always finds a way to fit walking into her day. "This weekend I got a chance to walk around Seattle before I picked up our daughter from the university there.  When I'm walking in a city, one of my favorite things to do is take photos of public art.  This whimsical mermaid decorates an iron gate in downtown Seattle!"

Judy W. writes a personal note, "When I embarked on the 28-day Walkabout, it quickly became clear to me that I had been longing to make a commitment like this without quite realizing it. I jumped into it with joy and something like relief. Many good things are blooming in my life this spring as cultivate this change from within. Even the obstacles turn out to be opportunities. Hooray and thank-you!

Colleen S. gives a bright outlook. "Take a walk and experience life in color!"

Carol C. makes us giggle with a little humor, "I have been enjoying the renew commitment to myself and the time alone during my daily morning walks. It helps me really prepare for the day and usually gets me out of having to make breakfast on weekend mornings, which is an added bonus."

Faye H. is proud of her walking partners: her husband, Gayle, and her daughter, Heather, walk with her nearly every day!

Barbara H. gets some motivation to walk with her adorable little four-legged friend.

Megan R. found a note while walking with her furry companion, "I found this note laying on the sidewalk while out walking one day. 'i can i will i can i will.' (i hope he or she did) I love it, it sits on my desk at home and is the last thing I see before walking out the door. I envision someone taking the time to write this affirmation down and then setting out to do it. Also the circles dotting the i's make me happy."

Suzanne G. is decked out for a walk in the woods with her dog.

Harriet B. walks with her dogs too!

    What motivating companions!

Thanks for making us proud, everyone!

    Keep walking!

    Walkabout Whereabouts.

We're two weeks into our 28-day quests for good health. Our Ambassadors have been walking up a storm, prioritizing their health and finding time to walk nearly every day.

Everyone should take the time to view Megan R.'s photographic blog. She loves walking with her four-legged friend. She's got a sense of humor too, recently tweeting, "beer & girlfriends night out helps you walk really fast 2 miles downtown to the get the metrorail."

Laurie C. paints a personal memory from her childhood, walking with her family as a child. She recalls, "Some of my best memories involve the smell of pine needles and Columbia Gorge trails along steep drop-offs."

Faye H. took a stroll through Castle Park this weekend. She's been trying out our Balance walkers. "I have enjoyed the Balance walkers, without the extra push to try out the shoes I might not have walked today."

The stories have motivated us, humored us and even brought a couple tears to our eyes. Here are a couple more. Read on!

Colleen S. took her whole family to the Barrett Jackson Auction Show [at her husband's suggestion, she jokes]. It was a day for the whole family and lots of walking!

Roberta W. went on a spiritual walkabout in honor of
Passover. "It seemed especially fitting to feel the sand give way under my feet—although the Hebrews didn’t have the benefit of my Orthaheel shoes as they trod the desert for 40 years."

Naomi S. has us smiling from ear to ear with her review of our Rhythm walkers:
"My feet tend to pronate (I'm using the lingo!) inward as I walk but these shoes actually make me stand straighter and take a stronger, more definitive stride. Which, ostensibly, will make me want to walk longer and further. Not a bad thing, in my book." Her blog is thoroughly entertaining!

Enjoy the reads! We hope you will find them as uplifting as we have. Until next time - step to it!

It's official! Here at the Orthaheel USA and Weil Integrative Footwear offices,  we've kicked off a nationwide Walkabout campaign that will begin on March 27, 2012, led by 50 brand ambassadors from across the United States.  The campaign will take place over a 28-day period of time, during which ambassadors will post about their journeys on a variety of social media channels.

So the search is on for our 50 brand ambassadors and we would love for you to join us on this journey and quest for optimum health.

Why join? Not only will the Walkabout get you a few steps closer to meeting your personal health and fitness goals, each ambassador will receive a wellness kit and a pair of Orthaheel or Dr. Weil Integrative Footwear shoes to fit three lifestyles – the individual who incorporates their daily walking routine into their commute, a mom walking to the park, or the power walkers -- and will be fitted with a pair of shoes to suit their walking style. Participants will also receive a one-year discount on the brands' footwear and orthotics. Upon completion of the 28-day challenge, one individual will be selected at random for a grand prize to be announced. There are also incentive prizes throughout the 28-days for those that post and share about their Walkabout experiences on their respective media channels.

To enter visit, http://www.vionicshoes.com/walkabout, and fill-out the short questionnaire. All ambassadors will be notified by Thursday, March 15, 2012.  The Walkabout will officially kick-off with Podiatrist Philip Vasyli and Dr. Andrew Weil in NYC on March 27th.
