There are so many options when summer sandal season hits and it is difficult to decipher how to not sacrifice style for comfort. Wearing the wrong sandals can cause serious problems, including Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, pain in the big toe, and even stress fractures. Finding the right comfortable sandal can prevent foot pain in the long run. That’s where our sandals buying guide comes in—to help you choose footwear that feels as good as it looks.
I see the most people coming into my office in late August and September, which I call “plantar fasciitis season.” It’s the result of wearing unsupportive sandals, usually flexible flip-flops, all summer long. It’s imperative to have shoes that are supportive during the active summer season and can withstand everyday wear. Avoiding soft, flimsy sandals is key, even if they initially feel comfortable. A completely flat sandal is equally as bad as a high heel. Instead, opt for a healthy sandal with a cushioned footbed that adapts to your natural foot shape for personalized comfort and better alignment. Supportive cushioning is key to providing shock absorption and to minimizing impact. Deep heel cups also add stability and support.
Sandals Buying Guide: What to Look for in a Sandal
- Flex Test for Stability: The sandal should not be able to fold completely in half, this ensures that the shoe has stability and arch support. A comfortable sandal that resists excessive bending helps protect your foot from strain and reduces the risk of developing foot problems like plantar fasciitis.
- Built-In Arch Support Is a Must: Ideally it should have contoured/built in arch support. A very flat sandal is just bad for your feet as a high heel. Many supportive sandals now feature orthotic-level contouring that cradles your foot shape and reduces foot fatigue.
- Ankle Straps for Secure Fit: Ideally an ankle strap or a strap at the back of the heel for added stability. Ankle straps help hold the sandal in place and prevent your foot from sliding forward, which can strain your toes and arches. This is especially important for heeled sandals or wedge sandals, like our Saratoga Wedge Sandal, where balance and support are key.
- Adjustable Straps for Summer Swelling: Look for sandals with adjustable straps that can accommodate summer swelling. Adjustable straps offer a customized fit for any foot type, from a wide foot to a narrow foot, and can be loosened during warmer days. Whether you’re wearing leather sandals, strappy sandals, or even gladiator sandals, adjustability ensures all-day comfort. Our Uptown Marin Toe Post Sandal is the perfect example of a shoe that can be easily adjusted to suit your needs.
- Look for a Subtle Wedge: A slight wedge to take pressure off the Achilles and plantar fascia. A small lift can make a big difference in relieving tension in the Achilles tendon and providing better heel support. This design element is why wedge sandals are a go-to for both style and relief from foot pain.
- Choose the Right Width: The width of the sandal is important to accommodate your foot and any ailments such as bunions, neuromas, and hammertoes. Look for footwear brands that offer women’s sandals in multiple widths for a better fit, especially if you have wider feet or specific foot problems.

When I tell patients that I do not recommend flimsy flip flops or sandals, that does not mean that you need to banish slips on forever. Two great options are the Evie Knit and Uptown Marin.
